COMMUNITY BASED TOURISM EXPERIENCE

Day 1

  • Arrival in Ruhengeri shortly after lunch, meet personal guide and check into home stay or hotel.
  • Afternoon drive to Lake Burera where an exciting experience with a traditional dugout canoe is waiting.
  • Visit to a community on Birwa Island, introduction to the local school, conversation with some locals who are glad to tell you about their culture.
  • Return to Ruhengeri for dinner at home stay or hotel.

 Day 2

  • Visit to a traditional village healer and his medical garden. The village doctor plays a very important role in the community, since most of the Rwandans still depend on the traditional medicines.
  • Walk around Lake Ruhondo in order to discover the life of the adjacent communities, and visit a children's centre which offers the opportunity to learn more about Rwanda's history and its current situation, as many of the children living here are orphans from families who have become victims of the genocide, either directly or indirectly.
  • Dinner at the hotel or home stay.

Day 3

  • Visit one of Ruhengeri's women associations, who are making baskets and mats from banana leaf. If you are interested you can try your own skills.
  • Afternoon experience with village women and possibility to learn about Rwandan cooking methods and local dishes: opportunity to become involved in the food preparation for dinner.
  • Eat the dinner you have been helping to prepare while listening to the history of Rwanda told by one of our guides.

 Day 4

  • Experience the traditional activity of local banana beer brewing. You will get an introduction to the various banana species and learn about the production of thirst quenching beer - a fascinating process to watch, taste and enjoy.
  • End of service around lunch time.
